Why are there limited sports wear for plus size women?

One of the reasons I truly missed traveling is the shopping spree. And no, I’m not talking about fancy factory outlets or branded goods in the malls. It’s more of Walmart, Forever21 and Target where plus size clothes are affordable yet stylish for me. I find it a struggle to buy sports wear for my size that is fitting yet comfortable for me to workout in Singapore. 

I searched through various Adidas, Puma, Nike, Royal Sporting house and JD stores only to find that the sizes run small and I probably could fit the male XL size which honestly is very baggy and gets in the way due to the length of the shirt. Why is it so hard to find workout wear over a size 16?

Isn’t it ironic when plus sizes individuals are being told to lose weight by working out but yet society doesn’t make it easy for us? It is just infuriating to pay more for an outfit that suits us due to a lack of demand. I probably won’t mind getting the male sizes for workout wear but how about internally? Sports Bra with good support that won’t break my back whenever I do push ups, where can I find it?

I cannot be buying it off from US Websites and delivering it to Singapore via Vpost, can’t I? I have attempted purchasing it from Shein/Shoppee, mostly aesthetically intriguing and sizes fit but it doesn’t support at all when working out. But of course, when desperate times call, I simply have to suck it up and eventually do what I should be doing to stay rooted to my goals after weighing the pros and cons for sure. 

To add on, working out in the gym as a Hijabi means I am sweating internally under the scarf. Though Nike’s Pro Hijab is available, the sizes run a bit smaller. The internal loop where we don the hijab and frame our face in is mainly for athletes with smaller faces and me sticking into it, gives me a feel of pau being squeezed by a Cotton Steaming Cloth.  

Though Nike has revolutionized on making hijab breathable and keep still, more can be done to make it more stylish and accommodative to the general public instead of just the athletes.  Personally I prefer working out at home because wearing a hijab is inconvenient and is bad for my hair when it is soaked with sweat and smelly. Furthermore, when the scarf is wet, it gets really heavy and stiff which completely obstructs my workout routine and generally feels heavier on my shoulder. I tend to not make big movements because I kept having to keep the hijab in place. 

Nike’s initial sport hijab prototype focused on being- lighter, softer and more breathable garment. Upon receiving an enthusiastic response, they modified the fit to account for a range of head sizes and face shapes by having two sizes – XS/S and M/L. I had been trying to find Nike’s Pro Hijab in M/L in Singapore but mostly it ran out and I had to find it online. I had added it to cart and will be updating on how convenient and fuss-free it will be when it arrives on my doorstep. 

Apparently, the material is light and airy which makes it less humid internally. The idea of it being light and airy and yet, stay still while working out is puzzling which makes this an interesting purchase.

The back of the hijab is elongated to ensure it doesn’t come untucked. Fluff threads were used at the neck and face to minimize rubbing and irritation that can occur when an athlete sweats.

That’s a long way from having trouble finding a suitable hijab for a plus size Muslimah and something appealing for me to wear to the gym. To add on, the Nike Pro Hijab is available in neutral colors and sadly the company seems not driven to expand to include more designs for the public. 

There are tons of places online for us to purchase plus size workouts but mostly, how reliable are they in providing good fit that are stylish and provide the necessary support. Meanwhile, I am just gonna be looking at the regular-sized outfits at the stores with envy.

Common Phrases You Should Learn Before Travelling

Language barriers can be very difficult when traveling to countries that communicate differently. At times, it very well may be frustrating to try and find your way around or complete basic tasks. Traveling to Korea, I applied my self-taught Korean and mandarin (as there are many Chinese working at MyeonDong) and spoke to the locals to order food. It was especially useful in the old restaurant where the Ahjumma can only speak Korean and my basic phrases empowered me to order Tuna Kimbap effortlessly. As I learned the language by watching Korean shows, sadly I had picked up informal Korean and got lashed out once by an elderly lady for being discourteous.

With that in mind, I took the opportunity to figure out how to verbalize correctly the next trip to Korea. To add on, it is important to speak simple greetings as you would not want to portray yourself as rude. It’s always good to know how to greet others. Don’t forget about other greetings as well. For example, good morning/afternoon/night/evening.

Other than my personal fitness journey and my travel escapades, I have re-ignited my interest in Korean variety show and would like to share some of the highlights here.

Just to emphasize, nope it is not something I stumbled recently or following the trends of KPOP.

I had discovered XMAN in primary school and greatly enjoyed the variety shows which has Kang Ho Dong and Yoo Jaesuk in the same show. This is a series of throwback post on why XMAN is still the funniest variety show, which undoubtedly explains why the show becomes the starting point of many entertainers like HAHA, KIM JONG KOOK, KIM JONG MIN and features original idol stars like Shinhwa, GOD, Hyori, TVXQ/DBSK and SS501.

Needless to say, I will begin with my favourite episode of all – E089.

This was a Summer Special in Pattaya and featured the best star list in my honest opinion – Hwangbo, Haha, Lee Minki, Ji Sangryul, Andy & Hyesung (Shinhwa), Park Jongkyu, Yoon Eunhye, Kim Jong Kook.

This was Kim Jong Kook’s return to XMAN after months as he was preoccupied making his album. So during the Yoon Eunhye (YEH) introduction, they teased her asking how she feel about him coming back and honestly, she was glad and cheerful. (Some say it is scripted but as a viewer, I can see that she genuinely is happy to see him) Look at how shy he became when she say, “Today’s recording will be enjoyable”. After turning away, he genuinely smiled and laugh. (God knows how formal he can be when interacting with other female celebrity).

In the Introduction, they also featured Lee Jin and Andy who was quite popular for their pairing on Banjun Dramas. Their loveline was threatened by Jihoon who had thick lips similar to Andy and Hyesung who broke his remote when seeing Andy and Lee Jin kissing scenes. To add on, Lee Min Ki came into the picture and wanted to confront Kim Jong Kook cause he was interested in YEH.

On the first game, Lee Minki was happy to match with Eunhye and MC YJS asked them to sing to each other to loosen the nerves. YEH say a song with the lines of ‘don’t like me, I have eyes for other man’ which was referred to KJK meanwhile LMK sang something in the lines “I unknowingly also fall for you” but he cracks up (cause he is an actor not a singer). Surprisingly YEH lost to LMK which earned disapproval look on KJK but as she was intending to get out of pool, she naturally headed to KJK (so how scripted can it be?), which got pointed out by Kang Ho Dong, only for JongGyu and KJK quarrelling to assist her.

Thus naturally, next competitor for LMK is KJK and as unwilling as they might be, they are still holding hands and sing to each other before playing the game. Before singing, LMK mentioned to him, “All this time, was he happy?” and KJK responded, “In life, there are things that you cannot get”. LMK then sang in the lines of “GO AWAY GO AWAY” meanwhile KJK said “This is probably what YEH wanted to say just now” and sang “There is another man”.

Needless to say, LMK lost the game.

The next interesting bit is when team compete, with the LJ,HYESUNG, LEE JIHOON versus YEH, KJK AND Park Jongkyu. With YEH (who is famous for her strength) and KJK, they easily wins. Next up was the power showdown between KHD and KJK. God knows no one can defeat each other (1on1) on K-Variety now, physically. In this episode, KJK flipped KHD and that was no easy feat. He was the MVP and was shy to expose his body and hides under water.

The next segment was better because it features the infamous of-course game!

All in all, this was my ultimate favourite episode because KJK-YEH-LMK love triangle, Lee Jin-Andy-Hyesung love triangle, strength showdown between Jong Kook and Hodong and Haha’s initial parody of Turbo Hits.

It is a 36km trail that extends from Jurong Lake Gardens to Coney Island Park in the Northeast. It includes a boardwalk, amenities, and a wetland along the reservoir’s edge. Facing the waters under a cloudy day bound to make you feel at ease and calm.

 Kranji Marshes Loop

Be enchanted by the rural nature with a 56.8-hectare area situated along the Kranji Reservoir.

It is home to a rich array of flora and fauna, including more than 170 species of birds, 54 species of butterflies, and 33 types of dragonflies. Overlooking the grass habitats, it is an extraordinary spot for guests to observe nature and appreciate the fresh air. 

Western Adventure Loop

This would definitely be the trail that less mainstream because of seclusion. The Western Adventure Loop brings you through parks and greenways in western Singapore where you can decide to chill amid nature. You may even lookout for the 50 bird species that have been sighted on the loop along Bukit Panjang Park Connector. 

Hort Park and Southern Ridge

This park is a part of the Southern Ridges that comprises Mount Faber Park, Telok Blangah Hill Park, Kent Ridge Park, and Labrador Nature Park, with a lush and calm environment to enjoy with family. You may also paddle the Southern Ridge to get to the Henderson Wave, which is also the highest pedestrian bridge in the country.
